na Dorsan

na Dorsan

In November 2024, a new monument was unveiled in South Galson to mark 100 years since 52 families found new homes in Melbost, South Galson, and North Galson.

Named 'na Dorsan', and situated behind the Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn Business Centre, the design of the circular monument was created by recognised artists Will Maclean and Marian Leven, who previously worked on the Iolaire and Sùileachan memorials, and was built by Chris Barrowman. The new monument will serve as a poignant space for reflection on the community's shared history, as well as allow visitors to immerse themselves in the local landscape.

The 1924 establishment of the Galson community was seen as a homecoming, with many families having hailed from Dell, Borve, Shader, Carloway, and Fivepenny Ness, as well as further afield. In the hundred years since, community ownership has become a firm part of the area's identity, with UOG established in 2007 to manage the Galson Estate on the community's behalf.

There is an exhibition to accompany the monument, detailing more about the area's history, inside the Business Centre. The exhibition is open Monday - Friday, pam - 5pm. You can visit the monument at any time. You can also find more information on the Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn website.

There are other monuments commemorating the land raids across the Isle of Lewis including Aignish Cairn, An Sùileachan, Pairc Deer Raid Cairn, Bernera Riot Cairn and Gress Land Raiders monument: you can find out more about these monuments here.
